What sailing is like here
Distances are small and anchorages plentiful, so you can plan from one day to the next. The main variable is the mistral, which drops down the Rhône valley and can blow for several days on the western part of the coast. The eastern part near Nice is more sheltered from it.
Season
From May to October. May and June are quiet; July and August are among the busiest in the Mediterranean.
Worth the voyage
- Îles de Lérins
- Two wooded islands a few miles off Cannes. Sainte-Marguerite has an anchorage, Saint-Honorat a monastery.
- Porquerolles
- A national park west of Saint-Tropez with white beaches and no cars.
- Calanques
- Limestone fjords between Marseille and Cassis. Entry and anchoring are regulated.

Is the Riviera expensive?
Harbour fees in high season are among the highest in Europe. Anchoring in the bays is free, and around the islands there is plenty of it.
What is the mistral?
A cold north-westerly wind that drops down from inland. It can blow for three to six days and is the reason plans here are made by the forecast.
Can you sail to Corsica?
Yes; the passage is around a hundred and twenty nautical miles and is done overnight. Not every charter permits it, so we check for the specific boat.
